The historic North Devon inland Town of Barnstable sits strategically at the convergent of two rivers, the navigable River Taw the side it is located on and the much smaller River Yeo. At this point a stunning bridge of no less than sixteen arches spans the River Taw, at night the bridge is beautifully lit. Barnstable town being an ancient borough considered the first in England has for centuries been the main port and market town of North Devon. When the Norman arrived in 1066 they found a town already flourishing with trade and enterprise. It was even included in William the Conquerors famous Domesday Book of 1086. During the reign of Henry I the town of Barnstable had its first Lord of the Manor conferred upon it. Much later it was a strategic naval port during the reign of Edward III where its main trade was in the manufacture of wool and woollen goods. Much later and wine, tobacco and spices became important trade items arriving through its port.
Barnstable is geographically located approximately 40 miles due N.W. of Exeter, 9 miles N.E. of Bideford, and 192 miles W. by S. of central London and has a population of just over 34000.
The parish of Barnstaple comprises about 1096 acres of land, in the broad and fertile vale of the river Taw.
