Totnes is a market town usually held on Fridays and Saturdays as well as a popular Flea Market, on Tuesdays it hosts an authentic Elizabethan type market. Totnes is a civil parish at the head of the estuary of the River Dart in Devon England within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is about 22 miles (35 km) south of the city of Exeter and is the administrative centre of the South Hams District Council.

Totnes has a long recorded history, dating back to AD 907 when its first castle was built; it was already an important market town by the 12th century. Indications of its former wealth and importance are given by the number of merchants' houses built in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Today, the town, with its population of 7,444 is a thriving centre for music, art, theatre and natural health. It is said to be the second oldest boroughs in England. It has a quay at which visitors can take a six-mile long pleasure scenic cruise along the River Dart towards Dartmouth and its Marina and Estuary!

Totnes castle is a Norman moat and bailey castle sitting perched above the town on its own grassy mound looking like a crown on a green head, it was founded soon after the Norman Conquest of Great Britain. From the top it commands uninterrupted panoramic views across the River Dart and the rooftops of Totnes.

The town has two grandiose impressively looking covered pavement stone pillared arcades for shoppers to shop protected from the elements, they are called the Butterwalk and the Poultry walk where houses overhang the walkways.

The whole area is particularly picturesque and provides for some stunningly scenic walks for strollers to enjoy as well as the more seasoned ramblers, who might, want to follow the river path to the Dartmouth estuary.
